Such an interesting post! I never knew this! Now it makes me wonder... which stars have picky backstage lists because they are divas and which ones are following in Van Halen's footsteps? I am someone who suffers from a lack of attention to detail. I know this about myself and that is why I have a system of checks in place to make sure I don't miss the little things. It is crazy to me that such a large production as a show wouldn't have a similar system in place!
I think the biggest one is just having some sort of trigger that reminds you to go through a checklist. For example, when sending an email the obvious trigger is the "send" button. That is the moment that I 1. go over spelling/grammar 2. double check that the formatting isn't weird from copy and pasting 3. make sure names are spelled correct/everyone is CC'd, etc. When I form a new habit I will do something simple to give myself a mental reminder, like wearing a hair tie/bracelet/ note on my wrist that is different or something else that will make me go "oh yeah! I have to pay attention to this thing"
